A three-day ceasefire has begun between Ukraine and Russia: what we know
9 May 03:20
A three-day ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia went into effect at midnight on May 9 . The truce , proposed by U.S. President Donald Trump, was agreed upon by Kyiv and Moscow. It is scheduled to last on May 9, 10, and 11 and provides for a cessation of hostilities, as well as a prisoner exchange of 1,000 for 1,000. Trump announced the agreement, and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed the ceasefire and preparations for the exchange, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
What the three-day ceasefire entails
According to a statement by U.S. President Donald Trump, the ceasefire between Ukraine and Russia is to be in effect from May 9 to May 11, 2026.
The agreement provides for:
- a cessation of hostilities;
- a three-day ceasefire;
- an exchange of prisoners of war on a 1,000-for-1,000 basis;
- continued negotiations toward a broader end to the war.
Trump stated that he hopes this agreement could mark “the beginning of the end” of the long-running war.
Zelenskyy confirmed the ceasefire and prisoner exchange
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that, as part of the negotiation process mediated by the U.S., Ukraine has secured Russia’s agreement to a prisoner exchange on a 1,000-for-1,000 basis.
According to Zelenskyy, the ceasefire is to be implemented on May 9, 10, and 11. He also reported that he has instructed the Ukrainian team to promptly prepare everything necessary for the exchange.
For Ukraine, the head of state said, the key humanitarian argument is the return of Ukrainian prisoners of war home.

Ukraine will respond in kind
Ukraine has agreed not to attack the site of the May 9 parade in Moscow, but will act in a mirror-image manner regarding the rest of Russian territory—depending on whether the Russian side adheres to the ceasefire.
Earlier, Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 374/2026 “On the Conduct of the Parade in Moscow.”
The document stipulates that during the parade, the area of Red Square will be excluded from the plan for the use of Ukrainian weapons.
Will the ceasefire be observed?
Despite official statements about the start of a three-day ceasefire, the main question remains whether it will actually be observed on the front lines.
Ukraine has previously repeatedly reported violations of the ceasefire by Russia. Earlier, Zelenskyy reported that the Russian side had violated the ceasefire that Ukraine had declared starting May 6. The initiated “ceasefire” was supposed to begin on the night of May 5–6; however, according to the Ukrainian side, Russian troops continued their attacks.
New reports of shelling, assaults, and drone strikes, according to the president, confirm that Russia’s claims of a ceasefire were not actually implemented on the front lines.
