For every person born in Ukraine, three die: a demographer has released the key figures

Recently, Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov spoke about the issue of depopulation in Ukraine and the topic of labor migrants. Moreover, the head of the Presidential Office, Kirill Budanov, raised the issue of the labor shortage, which they hope to address specifically through migrants from Africa and other countries.
But even if all Ukrainians return after victory, this does not negate the fact that the nation is dying out.Vasyl Voskoboynik, head of the “Office of Migration Policy” and an expert on demography and labor migration, told Channel 24 about the pace of this decline, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
At what rate is the Ukrainian nation dying out?
Unfortunately, demographers and experts have long been “crying out” about the grim statistics of the Ukrainian nation’s extinction.
Currently, Ukrainians are dying out at a rate of 300,000 people per year. But these statistics do not include the consequences of the war.
“Purely demographically, we are dying out at a rate of 300,000 people per year. This does not take into account any military actions. And this began back in the mid-2000s. That is, every year about 450,000–500,000 people die, while about 200,000–250,000 are born,”
said Vasyl Voskoboynik.
He noted that in 2025, 170,000–180,000 Ukrainians were born.
At this rate, there are three deaths for every birth in the country.
Currently, the fertility rate in Ukraine is only 0.7 children per woman. Before the war, it was twice as high—1.4.
Such a rapid decline in population threatens an economic crisis. Therefore, according to Voskoboynik’s calculations, Ukrainian women must give birth to an average of 2.2 children per woman to maintain a stable population. This means that 10 women, for example, must give birth to 22 children.
However, there is currently no trend toward an increase in the birth rate. Every year, the population simply shrinks.
“This began as early as 2010–2012. And this trend is unchanging; it won’t change now,” Voskoboynik is certain.
Moreover, the situation is only getting worse due to mass migration. Furthermore, the expert predicts that even more Ukrainians may leave the country after the war.
Ultimately, this means that soon there will be no one left to work and pay taxes.
