Frosts are approaching Ukraine: temperatures will drop to -3…-5°C on April 21–22

A sharp drop in temperatures is expected in Ukraine on April 21–22, with frosts in the air and on the ground. This was reported by the State Emergency Service, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

An orange danger level has been declared in some regions, and in certain areas, ground temperatures may drop to -5 degrees.

According to forecasters, on the night of April 21, air frosts of 0…-3 degrees are forecast in the northern regions, as well as in the Volyn, Rivne, Khmelnytskyi, Vinnytsia, Cherkasy, and Poltava regions.

On April 22, air frosts of 0…-3 degrees are expected in most regions of Ukraine. An orange, Level II danger alert has been issued for these regions.

Separately, forecasters warn that in Zakarpattia, Odesa, Mykolaiv, and Kherson regions, ground frosts of 0…-5 degrees are possible on the night of April 22. A Level I hazard warning (yellow) is in effect for these regions.

At the same time, a warning has been issued for Kyiv Oblast regarding ground frosts of 0…-3 degrees, and a separate warning has been issued for Kyiv regarding ground frosts.

What will the weather be like on April 21

Across the rest of Ukraine on April 21, predominantly northerly winds of 7–12 m/s are forecast, with gusts up to 15–20 m/s in some southern regions. Nighttime temperatures will range from 1 to 6 degrees Celsius, but in some regions, ground frosts of 0…-3 degrees are expected.

Daytime temperatures are expected to reach 7–12 degrees Celsius.

In the Carpathians, wet snow is possible, and temperatures will range from 3 degrees below zero to 2 degrees above zero.

Forecast for Lviv and the Lviv region

According to the Lviv Hydrometeorological Center, in Lviv on the night of April 21–22, the air temperature will drop to 0…-2 degrees.

Across the region on the night of April 21, particularly in the north and mountainous areas, temperatures are expected to be 0…-3 degrees below zero, and on April 22, severe frosts of 0…-5 degrees are forecast throughout the region.

Light rain mixed with wet snow and icy conditions are also possible at night and in the morning on some sections of the roads.

Why are such frosts dangerous?

Such a cold snap is dangerous primarily for orchards and vegetable gardens. Frosts of 0…-3 degrees in the air and up to -5 degrees on the soil surface can damage the blossoms and ovaries of fruit trees, particularly apricots, peaches, cherries, and other early crops.

That is why the April cold snap can affect not only people’s comfort but also the future harvest.

What drivers and gardeners should keep in mind

Due to sub-freezing nighttime temperatures, wet snow, and possible black ice in the western part of the country, drivers should be especially careful in the morning. Owners of gardens and home plots should take steps to protect sensitive plants, seedlings, and flowering trees.
