Bacteria in frozen chicken: what is known about the latest food safety incident

Salmonella was detected in a batch of frozen chicken products imported from Ukraine to Azerbaijan.
This was reported by the agency Report.az, citing the Azerbaijan Food Safety Agency, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The shipment in question consists of 4.9 tons of frozen chicken.

- expiration date: February 16, 2028
- the product underwent laboratory testing in the country of import
During the inspection, a bacterium was detected that can cause serious intestinal infections.
Azerbaijan’s Response
The Food Safety Agency reported on the measures taken:
- An official request has been sent to Ukraine;
- the request includes a demand to suspend exports of products from a specific company;
- controls over food imports have been tightened.
In effect, this involves initiating a response procedure to a potential risk to consumer health.
Ukraine’s Response
The State Service of Ukraine for Food Safety and Consumer Protection confirmed receipt of the letter from the Azerbaijani side.
The agency stated that an inspection and investigation have already begun. Information regarding a possible violation of safety requirements is also being analyzed.
Tighter product controls
The incident comes amid a broader intensification of sanitary oversight:
- monitoring of salmonellosis cases has been intensified in Ukraine;
- preventive measures are being implemented in the regions;
- the number of inspections in the food sector has been increased.
