What is known about the August 20 attack on Kyiv

Russian forces fired ballistic and cruise missiles at the capital. The Ukrainian Air Force had warned of enemy targets moving toward Kyiv.

The first launches took place before the start of the new day. After an air raid alert was declared in the capital, a series of powerful explosions rang out.

The aftermath of the attack was observed in the Solomyanskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, and Darnytskyi districts. Residential buildings, medical and educational facilities, non-residential premises, and warehouses sustained damage.

In total, city authorities reported more than 12 damaged locations.

Five dead and 23 injured

Initial reports following the explosions indicated two women killed and six injured. The death toll continued to rise throughout the night.

According to updated information from the Kyiv City Military Administration:

  • five people were killed;
  • 23 people were injured;
  • the injured were hospitalized or treated at the scene;
  • search and rescue operations are ongoing;
  • people may still be trapped under the rubble of some buildings.

Medical personnel, rescue workers, police, and utility crews are working in several areas of the city.

What Has Been Damaged in the Solomyanskyi District

Most reports of damage have come from the Solomyanskyi District.

A five-story residential building was damaged as a result of the Russian strike. Damage to the upper floors and a fire in a nine-story building were also reported.

In other parts of the district:

  • a children’s hospital was damaged;
  • windows were shattered at a medical facility;
  • cars caught fire;
  • a school building was damaged;
  • people were trapped in a shelter;
  • residents were also trapped in one of the residential buildings.

Rescue workers are clearing away damaged debris and inspecting the premises.

People may have been trapped under the rubble in the Svyatoshynsky district

A non-residential building was destroyed in the Svyatoshynsky district as a result of the attack. According to preliminary reports from city authorities, people may have been trapped under the rubble.

State Emergency Service units and medical personnel are working at the scene. Information on the extent of the damage is being verified.

Rescue workers are inspecting the damaged building, dismantling the structures, and searching for possible victims.

Warehouses caught fire in the Darnytskyi district

In the Darnytskyi district, large-scale fires broke out in warehouse facilities following a Russian attack.

The fire spread over a significant area. Rescuers and specialized equipment were deployed to extinguish the blaze. Calls for emergency medical teams were also received.

City authorities are expected to release information on the final extent of the fire, the number of victims, and the nature of the damage once emergency rescue operations are complete.

Civil Infrastructure Damaged

Among the known damaged facilities are high-rise residential buildings, a children’s hospital, a school, warehouses, and other non-residential buildings.

Parts of Kyiv’s Svyatoshyn and Solomyanskyi districts are without power.

Utility workers are currently investigating the cause of the power outage.

Residents of the damaged buildings may have temporary restrictions on access to their apartments until structural inspections are completed.

This attack affected not only Kyiv but also the surrounding region—in the Brovary community, the strike caused damage to power facilities, and utility workers are awaiting confirmation that the situation is safe before beginning repair work.

How many missiles did Russia launch?

Monitoring channels reported that approximately 20 missiles may have been launched toward Kyiv over the course of about 15 minutes.

According to monitoring channels, ballistic and cruise missiles—including “Zircons” and “Onyxes”—were launched toward the city and its outskirts from Kursk, Voronezh, and Bryansk. Tu-95MS and Tu-160 strategic bombers are also already in the air. There are reports of “Kalibr” missiles being launched from the sea.

Russia has once again attacked residential neighborhoods in Kyiv

The nighttime strike on August 20 marked yet another massive Russian attack on the Ukrainian capital. Once again, densely populated residential areas and civilian facilities came under fire.

The Kyiv City Military Administration is urging residents not to ignore air raid alerts, to remain in shelters until the official all-clear is given, and not to post photos or videos of air defense operations.

Information regarding the dead, wounded, and damage is still being updated.
