Details of the incident

Initially, the police treated the tragedy as an accident. Law enforcement officers were called because of a report of a violent man at the station. When the patrol arrived, the 31-year-old Iraqi approached the police and took them to the girl’s body, claiming that he had just found her.

However, according to the Bild newspaper, just before she was hit by the train, the girl had called her grandfather, who had heard her screams. Therefore, her parents initially doubted the accident story.

The violent man’s alcohol test showed 1.35 ppm (the upper limit for drivers in Germany is 0.5 ppm). In the evening of the same day, the man was placed in a refugee reception center because of his aggressive behavior, and later transferred to a psychiatric clinic.

According to the Göttingen prosecutor’s office, the train was traveling at a speed of about 100 km/h. DNA testing revealed the suspect’s fingerprints on the girl’s shoulder, indicating a “strong grip.”

The girl came from a Ukrainian refugee family who arrived in Germany in July 2022.

Progress of the investigation and identity of the perpetrator

No preliminary connection between the killer and the victim has been established. The suspect refuses to comment on the charges.

The court ordered the man’s detention on suspicion of murder.

According to North German Radio, he was previously diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia.

The Iraqi applied for asylum in August 2022 in Braunschweig. The application was rejected and he was ordered to be deported to Lithuania. In February 2025, the court dismissed the lawsuit against deportation.

on July 17, the district court of Hanover refused to take the man into custody for deportation due to the absence of a risk of flight. After that, he again applied for asylum at the center in Friedland.
