Trump’s name has been removed from the Kennedy Center in Washington
14 June 04:18
Workers have removed U.S. President Donald Trump’s name from the facade of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts (Kennedy Center) in Washington. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing DW.
The American leader’s name has also been removed from the institution’s name on its website, as well as from signatures in emails, letterheads, press releases, and contracts. The name has been restored to its original form less than six months after the center was renamed.
Workers failed to meet the court-imposed deadline
The dismantling began a few hours after the U.S. Department of Justice stated that workers would not meet the court-imposed deadline—11:59 p.m. local time on June 12—due to thunderstorms that could pose a safety hazard. The department requested an extension of the deadline to 12:00 p.m. As a result, the scaffolding was dismantled on the evening of June 12, and it took about 30 minutes to remove the letters on the morning of June 13.

Representative Joyce Beatty , a Democrat from Ohio, called the request for an extension “inexcusable,” adding that the incident is part of the Trump administration’s “system of noncompliance” with the law.
Court blocks renaming of Kennedy Center in Trump’s honor
On May29 , following Beatty’s lawsuit,U.S. District Judge Christopher Cooper ruled that adding the current head of state’s name to the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts was unlawful. As stated in the ruling, the institution must be dedicated to “President Kennedy and only President Kennedy.”
The judge justified his ruling, in particular, by noting that the center’s name was granted by the U.S. Congress and “only Congress can change it.”
Trump became chairman of the board of trustees
In addition, Judge Cooper overturned the decision by the center’s new board of trustees to close it for two years for renovations. According to the judge, renovations may proceed after consultation with the center’s board.
The Kennedy Center’s former board of trustees was dissolved in 2025 by Donald Trump, who appointed its new members. Later, members of the new board of trustees elected Trump as its chairman and voted to add his name to the center’s title, so that it would be called the “Donald J. Trump and John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.”
