12 March 2025 22:35

Active hostilities continue in the Kursk sector. Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Oleksandr Syrskyi reported on the current situation in the area of Suzha, where Russian troops are trying to break through the defense of Ukrainian troops, on his Facebook page. According to him, the enemy is suffering significant losses and is suffering serious losses in manpower and equipment, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports

The situation is difficult, but the Armed Forces control the defense

In his statement, the Ukrainian Armed Forces Commander-in-Chief emphasized that Russian troops are actively using assault units of airborne troops and special forces.

“Active hostilities continue in the operational area of the Kursk military grouping, in the suburbs of Suzha and the areas around it. The enemy is using assault units of airborne troops and special operations forces to break through our defense, oust our troops from the territory of the Kursk region of the Russian Federation and transfer combat operations to the territory of Sumy and Kharkiv regions,” the Commander-in-Chief said.

Enemy losses: unprecedented scale

Since the beginning of the Kursk operation (from August 6, 2024 to the present day), the total losses of Russian troops have amounted to more than 54.9 thousand people. Of these, more than 22.2 thousand are irretrievable, 31.8 thousand are sanitary casualties, and 942 are prisoners of war.

Also, about 2,100 pieces of Russian military equipment and weapons were damaged or destroyed. In particular, 90 tanks, 654 armored combat vehicles, five MLRS, two air defense systems, one airplane, two helicopters, more than 1,100 vehicles, and 28 pieces of special equipment. In addition, almost 1,500 drones.

The Commander-in-Chief drew special attention to the massive strikes of Russian aviation on the territory of his own Kursk region. According to him, the city of Sudzha was almost completely destroyed as a result of such attacks.

The priority is to save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers

Given the complexity of the situation, the Ukrainian Armed Forces leadership emphasizes the importance of maneuvering troops to save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers.

“In the most difficult situation, my priority has been and remains to save the lives of Ukrainian soldiers. To this end, units of the Defense Forces, if necessary, maneuver to more favorable positions,” the Commander-in-Chief said.

Unmanned aerial vehicles and artillery are being used to effectively deter the enemy’s offensive.

Defense will last as long as necessary

As of 18:00, Ukrainian defenders repelled eight enemy assault attacks in this area. Despite the increased pressure from the Russian-North Korean army, the Armed Forces continue to hold the line.

“We will hold the defense in Kursk region as long as it is expedient and necessary,” the Commander-in-Chief assured.

The situation remains tense, but the Ukrainian military is doing everything possible to deter the aggressor and prevent the enemy from advancing deeper into Ukrainian territory.

In recent days, there has been more and more information that Ukrainian troops are retreating in the Kursk region. In particular, the Russians are already allegedly in control of a significant part of Sudzha, and the Russian flag is raised over the city administration there. Forbes reported that some Ukrainian troops are leaving the Kursk region. So, it is likely that the Kursk campaign of the Defense Forces is coming to an end.

The Kursk campaign of the Armed Forces of Ukraine

In August 2024, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) launched a large-scale offensive against the Kursk region of Russia, which was the largest invasion of Russian territory since World War II. This operation allowed Ukraine to achieve significant success, capturing about 100 settlements and nearly 600 Russian soldiers.

Russia was forced to send its best units to the area. Elite units of the Airborne Forces, GRU special forces, and brigades that had previously participated in the fighting in Donbas were immediately deployed to the region. In addition, North Korea has sent about 10,000 troops to Russia to take part in the fighting on the side of Russia.

In addition, Russia has spent enormous resources on defense: the construction of fortification lines, massive transfer of equipment and ammunition. In addition, following its traditional tactics of carpet bombing, Russia practically scorched its own territory to the ground, trying to drive the Ukrainian armed forces out of it. Thus, the Kursk campaign became an important operation that had a significant impact on the development of events at the front.
