“Children’s Cars” Will Be Introduced on Two More Routes: What We Know
22 April 10:12
Three new “children’s cars” from Ukrzaliznytsia have been refurbished and will be added to two trains: No. 011/012 Lviv–Odesa and No. 001/002 Kharkiv–Ivano-Frankivsk.
This is stated in a Ukrzaliznytsia press release obtained by EP, reports "Komersant Ukrainian".
Currently, the state railway is adding six new children’s compartment cars to its fleet.
All of them will undergo major refurbishment, be equipped with educational and interactive features, and adapted for comfortable and safe travel with children.
Tickets will go on sale from Lviv starting April 24, from Odesa starting April 25, from Kharkiv starting May 2, and from Ivano-Frankivsk starting May 3. Three more cars will be added to other passenger trains in the near future.
The cars are equipped with additional handrails in the aisles adjusted to children’s heights, safety guards for overhead shelves, changing tables, and fold-down seats in restrooms, playpens for safe sleeping, and bottle warmers for baby food.
A children’s menu will be available on board the children’s cars: cheese pancakes or nuggets with buckwheat. The cars are also equipped with additional folding ramps.
Tickets for “children’s cars” are available exclusively through the Ukrzaliznytsia mobile app. Their cost corresponds to the cost of compartment tickets of the same class on the same train.
In the app, these cars are specially marked as “Children’s.” Children up to and including 5 years of age travel on Ukrzaliznytsia trains for free and do not require a separate ticket.
“Children’s Cars” from Ukrzaliznytsia
As a reminder, on August 8, 2024, Ukrzaliznytsia launched its first “children’s car.” It was part of the Kharkiv–Yasinya train.
The “children’s car” is designed for comfortable travel for parents with young children. It features interactive posters, activity boards (educational toys), coloring books, a children’s menu, and special bedding.
In addition, the interior of the car is painted a different color, with drawings on each compartment and stars depicted on the ceiling. Overall, the car looks like a unique “children’s room on wheels.”
The children’s car was designed in collaboration with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and with financial support from the Belgian government. The modernization work on this car took about six months and was carried out at the Kyiv Electric Car Repair Plant.
Who can ride in the “children’s cars”?
Parents and families with children up to 18 years old can ride in the children’s car. However, Ukrainian Railways notes that the design was primarily intended for young children: those aged 0 to 8 will find it the most interesting.
Children from other cars can come to the “kids’ car” just to play.
Plus, the children’s car is located between the other cars, so other passengers can easily access it.
