Ukraine and Romania have simplified border crossing procedures for large buses

24 June 01:38

Ukraine and Romania have temporarily allowed high-capacity buses to cross through the “Dyakivtsi–Rakovets” international border crossing. The new procedure is intended to speed up border control and reduce lines at other checkpoints along the Ukrainian-Romanian border. This was reported by the Ministry of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Large buses will be allowed through “Dyakivtsi–Rakovets”

The decision was made following negotiations between Serhiy Derkach, Deputy Minister of Community and Territorial Development of Ukraine, and Ionel Scrișanu, State Secretary of the Romanian Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

The agreements reached allow high-capacity buses to cross the border via the “Dyakivtsi–Rakovets” checkpoint . Previously, the checkpoint’s capacity to handle such vehicles was limited.

The new regime will be in effect temporarily— until the end of summer 2026. It is during the summer months that the number of passengers traveling between Ukraine, Romania, and other European countries traditionally increases.

Why the border crossing’s operating procedures were changed

The main goal of this decision is to increase the throughput capacity of the Ukrainian-Romanian border and distribute passenger traffic among various border crossing points.

It is expected that allowing large buses to travel through the “Dyakivtsi–Rakovets” crossing will:

  • reduce passenger wait times at the border;
  • reduce lines at other border crossing points;
  • speed up international bus service;
  • improve transportation links between Ukraine and Romania;
  • increase the border’s throughput capacity during the summer travel season.

According to Serhiy Derkach, the opening of a border crossing point for high-capacity buses should ensure faster border crossings for passengers and significantly relieve pressure on neighboring routes.

Large buses may be allowed to operate on a permanent basis

Currently, the decision is temporary, but the Ukrainian and Romanian sides are continuing negotiations regarding the checkpoint’s future operation.

The Ministry of Community and Territorial Development stated that it is working on the possibility of making the movement of high-capacity buses through the “Dyakivtsi–Rakovets” crossing permanent.

The results of the checkpoint’s operation during the summer may serve as the basis for extending the new regime.

Carriers must register with “eCherga”

To exit Ukraine via the border crossing , carriers must register their bus in advance in the “eCherga” system .

The electronic system allows carriers to reserve a spot in line and plan their arrival time at the border crossing. Without prior registration in “eCherga,” buses will not be able to cross the border to leave Ukraine.

In addition, the bus route must comply with legal requirements and be entered into the relevant transportation registry.

What is known about the “Dyakivtsi–Rakovets” border crossing

The “Dyakivtsi–Rakovets” border crossing is located on the Ukrainian-Romanian border in the Chernivtsi region. Expanding the list of vehicles permitted to use this crossing is of great importance for passenger transportation and the development of international transport links.

This decision is particularly relevant in the summer, when the number of tourist, regular, and irregular bus routes to Romania and other European Union countries increases.
