Hackers from Odessa stole money through the accounts of users of U.S. online stores

In Odessa, law enforcement officials have uncovered a suspected group of hackers that may have targeted users of U.S. online trading platforms. According to preliminary data, the losses incurred by U.S. online services exceed $250,000. This was reported by the Office of the Prosecutor General, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"
The investigation began following information from the relevant U.S. authorities.
How the investigation began
According to the U.S. side, a group of individuals involved in cyberattacks on users of online trading platforms in the U.S. may have been operating from Ukraine.
After receiving this information, Ukrainian law enforcement launched an investigation and conducted searches in Odesa at the residences of the group’s suspected members.
During the investigative actions, the following items were seized:
- computer equipment;
- cell phones;
- other data storage devices that may contain evidence.

What the hackers are suspected of
According to investigators, the group members used malware to gain access to the devices of users of foreign online platforms.
After that, the attackers could log into other people’s accounts and make purchases using the victims’ bank cards or payment systems.
In other words, the scheme likely worked as follows:
- a user fell victim to malware;
- hackers gained access to the device or account;
- they made purchases through the victim’s profile;
- payment was made using the victim’s card or payment method;
- users and online platforms suffered losses.



Investigators are reviewing chargeback transactions
Separately, the investigation is reviewing transactions involving chargebacks.
This mechanism can be used in financial schemes where a payment is disputed or refunded after the goods or services have already been received.
Law enforcement officials are determining whether the suspects used this scheme for illicit enrichment.
Amount of losses
According to preliminary data, U. S. online trading platforms have suffered over $250,000 in losses.
This amount may be revised as law enforcement investigates other possible instances of criminal activity.

What law enforcement is doing
The Office of the Prosecutor General reported that the seized equipment is currently being analyzed.
Law enforcement is identifying:
- the full circle of individuals involved;
- the role of each member of the group;
- the number of victims;
- other possible incidents of attacks;

- funds transfer channels.
