Books Under Attack: Bookchef Publishing Has Suffered Damage Once Again

18 August 17:04

The shelling of Kyiv on the night of August 16 caused significant damage to the capital’s civilian infrastructure. Among the affected facilities were the office and warehouse of the Ukrainian publishing house Bookchef. This was reported on the publishing house’s page, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What damage was caused to the publishing house?

“The windows and facade of the online store were damaged, as were part of the warehouse facilities where books were stored, a photo area we were preparing for exhibitions, as well as the publishing house’s marketing materials and merchandise. The roof and facade of the building were seriously damaged,” Bookchef stated.

Despite the damage, the publishing house’s team announced that operations are continuing: the online store is operating as usual, and orders are being processed and shipped to customers.

Bookchef’s Losses in the Summer of 2026

Over the summer of 2026, Bookchef suffered losses—not for the first time—due to Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities. In total, the publishing house lost approximately 900,000 books as a result of these attacks.

As a result of a nighttime Russian attack on July 2, the central warehouse of Bookchef’s logistics partner, Denka Logistics—where the books were stored—was destroyed. Approximately 800,000 books were lost at that time.

On the night of August 5, Bookchef’s backup warehouse—located at the facility of its logistics partner, Denka Logistics, which had only just begun operations following the destruction of the main warehouse—came under rocket fire. More than 100,000 of the publisher’s books were lost in the fire.

How to Support Bookchef

For publishers during wartime, every copy purchased helps preserve jobs and enables the reconstruction of destroyed facilities.

“If you’ve been wanting to order a particular book for a long time, now is the time to do it. Or just check out the website and pick out something new. Because every order right now is a way to tell the Ukrainian publishing industry: we’re with you, we’re reading, and we support you,” Bookchef urges.

There are several ways to support the publishing house. Book lovers can place an order directly on the Bookchef website by choosing new releases or bestsellers.

You can also make a charitable donation to help rebuild the publishing house by transferring funds to repair the damaged warehouse, roof, and facade using the official account details:
