This is not the first time an F-16 has been lost during a combat mission
In May 2025, the Air Force also reported the loss of an F-16 while repelling a Russian air attack. At that time, the pilot shot down three aerial targets and was engaging a fourth when, after an emergency situation arose, he diverted the aircraft away from a populated area and ejected.
In June 2025, F-16 pilot Maksym Ustymenko was killed while repelling a large-scale missile and drone attack. According to the Air Force, he destroyed seven aerial targets and guided the damaged aircraft away from a populated area.
