The Verkhovna Rada has increased the number of the State Border Guard Service by 15,000 servicemen. This is necessary in order to further protect Ukraine’s border. This was announced by MP Yaroslav Zheleznyak (Voice faction), Komersant ukrainskyi
reports.
A total of 327 MPs voted in favour of the relevant draft law No. 11091 on amendments to the final provisions of the law “On the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine” at the plenary session of the Verkhovna Rada on Wednesday.
“Thus, the total number of employees of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine within a year from the date of termination or cancellation of martial law on the territory of Ukraine will be up to 75,000 people, including up to 67,000 military personnel,”
– zheleznyak said.
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine notes that this decision of the parliament will ensure the readiness of the State Border Guard Service to take control of the state border within its internationally recognised borders in the post-war period and will allow it to do so:
- Form border guard detachments under a new organisational and staffing structure (brigade type).
- Increase the density of protection of the state border with Russia and Belarus, maintain combat reserves in a state of constant readiness to respond quickly to changes in the security situation.
- Introduce a new model of state border protection on the restored sections of the state border and during the liberation of the temporarily occupied territories.
- Increase the engineering and technical equipment of the border and restore border infrastructure.
“The adopted law will allow the State Border Guard Service to adequately respond to current and potential threats to national security at the state border, especially given that as a result of Ukraine’s European integration aspirations, the border with the Russian Federation and the Republic of Belarus will eventually become the external border of the European Union,”
– said Deputy Minister of Ukraine Bohdan Drapyatyi.
