How much will Ukraine receive from Berlin next year: Germany has approved its budget figures

29 April 18:54

On Wednesday, April 29, the German government approved the key figures of the 2027 budget. It also included aid for Ukraine.

This was reported by Reuters, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Total borrowing will amount to €196.5 billion, driven by increased spending on aging infrastructure and defense.

In 2024, this figure stood at €50.5 billion under the previous government, before Germany abandoned its policy of fiscal conservatism last year in an effort to revive its economy. This year’s budget calls for an increase in public debt of €180 billion.

“The 2027 budget draft, which is part of the medium-term financial program through 2029, calls for total spending of €543.3 billion, which is 3.6% more than in the previous year,” the publication states.

A defense-focused budget

The budget calls for a significant increase in defense spending, which, according to the baseline budget, will rise to €105.8 billion in 2027 from €82.7 billion in 2026.

“Events over the past year, particularly in Iran in recent months, show how important investments in our defense capabilities are,” Chancellor Friedrich Merz told reporters.

Taking into account the special defense fund and funds for Ukraine, total defense spending in 2027 is expected to reach 144.9 billion euros.

Aid to Ukraine

According to the key points of the agreement, Germany will continue to provide Ukraine with support amounting to 11.6 billion euros in 2027 and 8.5 billion euros per year from 2028 to 2030.

“Responding to a question about reducing support for Ukraine starting in 2028, Finance Minister Lars Klingbeil pointed to the approved EU loan of 90 billion euros for Ukraine,” the publication writes.

The minister also added that the figures included in the financial program may change in the future, depending on Ukraine’s needs.

Following an agreement on key points on Wednesday and the cabinet’s approval of the first draft in July, budget discussions will begin in parliament in September, with final approval expected by the end of the year.

As a reminder, Germany continues to strengthen Ukraine’s defense capabilities. In particular, the country’s Defense Minister Boris Pistorius announced the launch of a large-scale support package for Ukraine’s air defense, designed to last several years.

In addition, Berlin and Kyiv have agreed to enhance the long-range capabilities of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. To this end, the countries are establishing a joint defense enterprise that will enable Ukraine to strike more effectively at long ranges.
