The Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine recently approved amendments to the 2026 State Budget that provide for additional funding to ensure the safe operation of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant and the Exclusion Zone.

This was announced by First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

Additional Funds for the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant

According to First Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy Denys Shmyhal, nearly 600 million hryvnias will be allocated for the needs of the Chernobyl NPP. Of this amount, over 525 million hryvnias will go toward maintaining the safety of the reactor units and the “Shelter” facility, as well as supporting the work of personnel at the Chernobyl NPP.

“An additional nearly 600 million hryvnias has been allocated for these needs. Of this amount, over 525 million hryvnias will go toward maintaining the safety of the reactor units and the ‘Shelter’ facility, as well as ensuring the work of personnel at the Chernobyl NPP,” Shmyhal noted.

In addition, over 72 million hryvnias will be allocated to maintaining the environmentally safe condition of the exclusion zone, monitoring the territory, and fire prevention measures. This is an important aspect, as the exclusion zone remains a sensitive area that requires constant monitoring and care.

Support for the coal industry

The budget amendments also provide for funding for the coal industry. Over 127 million hryvnias will be allocated for this purpose, which will go toward supporting the industry and fulfilling social obligations to employees of state-owned mines.

In addition to supporting the energy sector, the budget amendments include additional funds for cybersecurity and the IT infrastructure of the Ministry of Energy. This is an important step toward ensuring the security of information systems and protection against potential cyber threats.

The budget amendments provide for a 2.291 billion hryvnia increase in state budget revenues for 2026, while expenditures will be reduced by 276.3 million hryvnia. This will allow for a more efficient allocation of financial resources and ensure funding for priority sectors.

As a reminder, the Verkhovna Rada adopted a law that changes the pay system for police officers and civil protection service employees. The document provides for a significant increase in minimum pay, an update to the structure of allowances, and a clearer mechanism for determining salaries.
