Why Izmail Is Regularly Under Attack

Izmail is one of the key port cities in the Odesa region on the Danube. After the start of the full-scale war, the Danube ports became a vital part of Ukraine’s export logistics, particularly for agricultural products.

This is precisely why Russia regularly attacks the port infrastructure of the Odesa region, attempting to disrupt logistics operations, export shipments, and the functioning of critical routes.

Previous attacks on Izmail

This is not the first Russian attack on Izmail’s port infrastructure. On the night of May 2, Russian forces also struck the city’s port facilities. At that time, local authorities reported damage but no casualties.

Earlier, on April 17, a Russian attack on the port in Izmail resulted in damage to industrial buildings and railway facilities.

Also in April, following a strike on southern Odesa Oblast, a Panamanian-flagged vessel, a pier, and a barge were damaged in the port of Izmail.

Russian attacks threaten civilian shipping

It was reported yesterday that a Russian strike drone attacked the Chinese merchant ship KSL DEYANG, which was at sea near the Odesa region. This is yet another example of how Russian attacks pose risks not only to Ukrainian infrastructure but also to international civilian shipping.

The port infrastructure of the Odesa region is of strategic importance for Ukraine’s exports and economy, so strikes on such facilities can affect port operations, logistics, ship insurance, and international trade routes.
