Russia will not cease hostilities until it achieves its key political objective—the complete occupation of the Donetsk region. This was stated by military analyst and co-chair of the civic initiative “Prava Sprava,” Dmitry Snegirev, in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
Capturing major cities is a difficult task
At the same time, according to Snegirev, the implementation of these plans seems unlikely in the short term.
“They are not capable of taking the Donetsk region or its four most industrial cities even within the next year,” he noted.
These are the region’s key cities—Kostiantynivka, Druzhkivka, Sloviansk, and Kramatorsk—which form a powerful industrial agglomeration.
“These are huge industrial cities that practically merge into one another, which significantly complicates the nature of an assault,” the analyst explained.

The Bakhmut Experience: Months of Fighting and Tens of Thousands of Casualties
Snegirev cited the battles for Bakhmut as an example illustrative of the Russian army’s capabilities.
“They stormed Bakhmut for 9 months, and this is a small city compared even to Kostiantynivka,” he emphasized.
According to various estimates, Russian troop losses in the battles for this city reached tens of thousands. The analyst also drew a comparison with events from World War II to demonstrate the scale of the losses.
“For comparison: during the occupation of all of Poland, Germany lost about 20,000 soldiers. Here—up to 90,000 for Bakhmut alone,” he noted.
Despite the significant losses, according to Snegirev, this does not change the approach of the Russian military and political leadership. The expert emphasized that one should not count on exhausting Russia solely through human losses.
“I don’t want to lie and say that we will exhaust them in terms of human resources. Unfortunately, the level of losses has not affected the Russian Federation,” Snegirev stated.
According to him, even the Ukrainian military command is forced to revise its assessments of the impact of losses on the Russian Federation
