Will Saharan dust blanket Ukraine? Forecasters share their prediction

14 April 04:03

Over the next two days, air currents over Ukraine will not be conducive to the spread of dust from the Sahara. This was reported by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, citing EUMETSAT satellite data, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Thus, no large-scale influx of Saharan dust into Ukraine is forecast in the near future.

Where is Saharan dust currently being observed?

According to meteorologists, a small amount of dust is indeed being carried in the airspace over the Mediterranean Sea toward southern Italy.

In other words, dust from the Sahara is currently present in the atmosphere over parts of Europe, but its movement does not yet pose any significant risks to Ukraine.

Will dust from the Sahara reach Ukraine?

Forecasters noted that a shift in air currents toward the west is expected on April 16. This could create conditions for an air mass with a low dust content to reach the far west of Ukraine.

At the same time, the forecast emphasizes that even in this case, dust concentrations will remain low.

Will dust affect air quality?

The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center emphasized that any dust concentrations will be insignificant and will not have a noticeable impact on air quality.

In other words, even if part of the air mass containing dust reaches the far west of Ukraine, no significant deterioration in air quality is expected.

What forecasters are saying next

The Hydrometeorological Center reported that they are continuing to monitor the situation and will be sure to provide updates on new forecasts should conditions change.

This means that the situation is under constant monitoring, and Ukrainians will be able to find out promptly if the movement of air masses changes.

What does this mean for Ukrainians?

For most regions of Ukraine, the forecast looks favorable: in the coming days, air currents will not contribute to the spread of dust from the Sahara across the country.

Only in the far west of Ukraine, starting April 16, conditions may arise for the arrival of an air mass with a slight dust content, though this will have no noticeable impact on people’s well-being or air quality.
