US President Donald Trump will help Ukraine purchase more air defense systems. This was stated by White House spokeswoman Caroline Leavitt a few hours after a telephone conversation between the American leader and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, according to
“President Zelensky asked for air defense systems […] and President Trump agreed to work with him to see what is available, particularly in Europe,” she said.
Levitt also added that “the exchange of military intelligence to protect Ukraine” will continue.
Le Monde noted that according to Levitt’s statement and the words prepared by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and National Security Adviser Michael Volz, Trump and Zelenskyy “had a fantastic phone conversation” during which the Ukrainian leader thanked the US president “for American support and, in particular, for the Javelin missiles.”
The spokeswoman’s statement also said that the two presidents would continue to work together “to put a real end to the war” and believe that “peace is possible.”
At the same time, the politicians discussed energy issues.
“Trump said that the United States could be very helpful in operating these power plants because of its experience. American ownership of these plants would be the best protection for this infrastructure and the best support for Ukraine’s energy infrastructure,” the statement said.
They also mentioned the recent release of Ukrainian prisoners from Russian captivity.
“Donald Trump asked Volodymyr Zelenskyy about the children who have been missing from Ukraine since the beginning of the war, including those who have been abducted, and President Trump pledged to work with both sides to ensure that these children are brought home,” the statement added.
The statement summarized that the presidents of Ukraine and the United States agreed that “all parties must continue to work to ensure that the ceasefire is respected.”
