The National Police of Ukraine currently employs more than 100,000 officers, of whom about 9,000 are fighting on the front lines.
This was stated by National Police Chief Ivan Vyhovsky at a briefing, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Ukrinform.
“The National Police employs just over 100,000 police officers. 25,000 of them are women. And 13,500 are police officers under the age of 25, meaning they are not of draft age. At the same time, about 9,000 police officers are constantly fighting on the front lines, and more than 30,000 are deployed and working in areas close to the combat zone,” he said.
Commenting on the actions of two police officers who abandoned civilians, including a child, at the scene of Saturday’s terrorist attack in Kyiv, Vyhovsky called the situation “regrettable.”
“We cannot ignore it. We are making personnel decisions, and the materials we gather (during the internal investigation—ed.) will be forwarded to the State Bureau of Investigation. However, it is not entirely fair or accurate to draw conclusions about the entire National Police system based solely on the actions of these two officers,” the head of the National Police stated.
At the same time, he emphasized that, on the other hand, the police acted promptly in this case—in accordance with protocol—and quickly neutralized the terrorist.
“And I want to express my sincere condolences to the families of the deceased and wish a speedy recovery to the wounded,” said Vygivsky.
As reported, on Saturday in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, an unknown assailant opened fire on people. He then took hostages in a store and fired at police officers during his apprehension. Negotiators attempted to make contact with the assailant. Ultimately, he was neutralized.
There were reports of six people killed and 14 wounded as a result of the shooting.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that eight people injured in the shooting in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv on Saturday are currently being treated in the city’s hospitals.
The Office of the Prosecutor General noted that the shooter was a native of Moscow.
According to the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the suspect possessed a registered firearm—a carbine. While walking down the street, he shot and killed four people; the fifth victim, who was being held hostage, was shot inside the store.
Investigators from the Security Service of Ukraine classified the shooting of civilians and the taking of hostages in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv as a terrorist act. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
Meanwhile, a video was shared on social media showing police officers leaving the scene of the attack, leaving civilians—including a child—in danger.
