A criminal case has been opened against the police officers who fled during a shooting in Kyiv, leaving civilians unprotected.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a Telegram post by Ukraine’s Prosecutor General Ruslan Kravchenko.

“The investigation will determine the legality of the police’s actions during the apprehension of the terrorists. Criminal proceedings have been initiated regarding the improper performance of official duties by police officers during the terrorist attack in the capital on April 18, 2026,” Kravchenko stated.

Legal classification of the criminal offense: Part 3 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine (Official negligence resulting in serious consequences).

“All actions of law enforcement officers at the moment of a critical threat to citizens’ lives, in particular the incident involving leaving a minor child in danger and the failure to stop the attacker in a timely manner, will receive a proper legal assessment,” the Prosecutor General emphasized.

According to him, the group of prosecutors in the case is led by the Kyiv City Prosecutor. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by the State Bureau of Investigations.

“We guarantee that the investigation will be conducted objectively and impartially. The public will receive answers, and those responsible will face legal punishment. Justice will be served,” Kravchenko noted.

The Prosecutor General also denied reports that the mother of a 12-year-old child had died in the shooting.

Yesterday, Kravchenko reported that the shooter’s victims were a married couple. The husband died at the scene, and the mother died in the hospital from her injuries. Their 12-year-old son also sustained a gunshot wound.

Today, however, the Prosecutor General clarified that the boy’s mother is alive. It turned out that the child’s aunt was the one who died.
