19 April 10:19
A video has surfaced online showing police officers fleeing from a gunman during yesterday’s terrorist attack in Kyiv and leaving civilians unprotected. An internal investigation will be conducted.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a Telegram post by Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko.
In the video, which eyewitnesses posted online, patrol officers can be seen fleeing after hearing gunfire.
In addition, the police left civilians, including a child, unprotected.
The video also shows a terrorist shooting a man while a young boy tried to flee.
Klymenko has already responded to the incident.
The minister instructed the head of the National Police of Ukraine, Ivan Vyhovsky, to conduct an internal investigation into the actions of the police officers during the terrorist attack in Kyiv and to provide all information to the State Bureau of Investigation.
“To serve and protect” is not just a slogan. It must be backed up by appropriate professional actions. Especially in critical moments when people’s lives depend on it,” Klymenko emphasized.
He noted that the results and conclusions of the internal investigation will be made public by the National Police as soon as possible.
Shooting in Kyiv
As a reminder, on the evening of April 18, an armed man opened fire indiscriminately on passersby in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv, after setting his own apartment on fire.
After that, he ran into and barricaded himself inside the “Velmart” supermarket, where people were present.
Police and other law enforcement agencies surrounded the area, after which negotiators spent about 40 minutes trying to establish contact with the man.
After he shot one of the hostages, KORD special forces stormed the supermarket. The gunman opened fire on the police and was killed during the arrest.
Ukrainian law enforcement agencies classified the man’s actions as a terrorist attack. It is known that six people were killed and more than a dozen were injured as a result of the shooting.
