Following the shooting in Kyiv: the head of the patrol police has resigned

19 April 17:02

Police General Yevgeny Zhukov has resigned from his post as head of the Patrol Police Department of the National Police of Ukraine.

This was reported by RBC-Ukraine, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

The decision to resign was made following a scandal involving patrol officers who arrived at the scene of a shooting yesterday but fled after shots were fired.

“As a combat officer, I have decided to submit a report requesting my dismissal from the position I hold. I think this is the right thing to do,” Zhukov announced during a press conference regarding the shooting.

Zhukov also commented on the patrol officers’ actions during the shooting. According to him, they acted “unprofessionally and disgracefully.”

“They failed to assess the situation properly and left wounded civilians in danger. This is a very shameful incident. An internal investigation will be conducted, and all supervisors will be held accountable for these actions—all supervisors who are the superiors of these two police officers,” he said.

At the same time, National Police Chief Ivan Vyhovsky noted that Zhukov “will be assigned some other position.”

“Perhaps it will involve providing assistance specifically related to the war,” the National Police chief clarified.

Shooting in Kyiv and the police scandal

On the evening of Saturday, April 18, a man armed with a carbine opened fire in the Holosiivskyi district of Kyiv. He shot and killed five people on the street and then barricaded himself inside the “Velmart” supermarket. Once inside the supermarket, the shooter killed another person—one of the hostages.

The shooter was killed by police special forces during the assault. He turned out to be 58-year-old Dmitry Vasylchenkov, a native of Moscow.
