Fig peaches are losing popularity in Ukraine: what are the reasons?

Demand for fig peaches in Ukraine has dropped significantly, even though just a few years ago this crop was one of the most promising niches on the market. This was reported in an article in the magazine “Gardening Ukrainian Style” by Lyubomyr Stelmashchuk, a horticulturist and consultant on stone fruit cultivation, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing AgroTimes.
According to him, while the entire fig peach harvest was successfully sold five years ago, the situation has changed dramatically over the past two seasons. Last year, the farm harvested about 400 kg of fruit, only a portion of which was sold, while the rest was left on the trees.
The producer cites the labor-intensive nature of the harvest as one of the reasons. By way of comparison, in 2020, a crew of 20 workers harvested only 2.5 metric tons of “Saturn” fig peaches in a single day, whereas the very next day, the same workers harvested 14 metric tons of the traditional “Mostyskyi Diamond” peach variety. According to Stelmashchuk, it is precisely the difficulty of harvesting and declining consumer interest that make further expansion of fig peach orchards unattractive to growers.
