Rat poison found in baby food in Austria: an investigation has been launched

20 April 02:03

Rat poison was found in HiPP baby food in Austria—the products have been recalled from stores, and authorities are investigating possible external interference.

This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing The Guardian.

The incident occurred after a customer reported a suspicious product. Laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of a toxic substance in a jar of baby food containing carrots and potatoes.

Following this, the product was removed from over a thousand Spar supermarkets in Austria.

How to spot a counterfeit?

Police noted that dangerous jars can be identified by several signs: a sticker with a red circle on the bottom, a damaged or already opened lid, the absence of a protective seal, or an unusual odor.

Preliminary laboratory tests of similar cans seized in the Czech Republic and Slovakia also revealed the presence of a toxic substance.

Meanwhile, Austrian law enforcement officials reported that the risks became known following investigations in Germany.

HiPP’s Response

HiPP stated that it does not rule out external interference.

“According to our current information, this critical situation is linked to external criminal interference affecting the Spar Austria distribution channel,” the company noted.

The manufacturer also warned that consuming the contents of such cans could be life-threatening.
