British Prime Minister Starmer to Announce His Resignation on Monday — Media Reports

21 June 07:15

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer will announce his resignation on Monday, June 22. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Reuters.

According to the publication, the threat to Starmer’s position escalated sharply on Friday, June 19, when his rival Andy Burnham secured a seat in Parliament, which would have allowed him to officially challenge the country’s leader.

According to media reports, Starmer discussed his resignation with his wife at their country home in Chequers before making a final decision, but senior Labour Party officials expect a clear statement regarding his future as early as Monday.

However, a Reuters source in the government said that Starmer remains focused on his work.

Starmer led the center-left Labour Party to a landslide victory in the 2024 election, but has become deeply unpopular following a series of scandals and political U-turns that have left many voters with the overall impression that he cannot deliver on his promises to improve their standard of living.

If he resigns or is removed from office, it would mean the country would appoint its seventh prime minister in a decade—a sign of fairly high turnover.

According to Reuters’ tally, more than 100 elected lawmakers from Starmer’s party—roughly a quarter of all Labour Party representatives in the House of Commons—have publicly stated that they want him to resign or set a timeline for his departure.
