A Ukrainian man was detained in Warsaw after catching a legendary long-lived catfish

In Warsaw, police detained a 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen suspected of involvement in the capture of a large catfish from a lake in the Gozław area. The fish, measuring 183 centimeters in length, had lived in the body of water for over 20 years and was well known to local residents.

According to Polish media, the caught catfish was a local “legend.” The fish had lived in the body of water for about two decades and had been spotted by local residents on numerous occasions.
Local fishermen had caught this catfish before, but because of its famous status, they would always remove it from the hook and release it back into the water. This time, things turned out differently.
After being caught, according to eyewitnesses, the fish was placed in the trunk of a car without access to water and taken away in an unknown direction.

The story gained attention after posts and videos from the scene began appearing on social media. Users who claimed to have witnessed the incident stated that the men’s actions immediately sparked outrage among people at the lake.

The 7th District Police Headquarters in Warsaw reported that a man who may be involved in the case has already been detained. He turned out to be a 57-year-old Ukrainian citizen.
Currently, investigators from the Criminal Investigation Department are establishing all the circumstances of the incident. The police emphasized that it is too early to speak of the final legal consequences for the suspect.
What the suspect may be suspected of
Polish police suspect that there may be two possible violations involved.
First, the man may have caught the fish during a closed season when catfish are protected.
Second, law enforcement officials do not rule out animal cruelty, as the fish was transported without access to water.

According to Polish law enforcement, the catfish protection period in Warsaw runs from January 1 to May 31.
Since the incident occurred on May 30, the fish may have been caught during the closed season. This is one of the main grounds for investigating the legality of the men’s actions.
