Ukraine has significantly increased its agricultural exports: the main reason

During the first nine months of 2024, Ukraine’s agricultural exports increased by more than a quarter, namely by 9.9 million tonnes. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian" with reference to the State Customs Service.

During the first three quarters of 2024, Ukraine showed a significant increase in agricultural exports. During this period, 48.9 million tonnes of agricultural products worth USD 10.5 billion were exported, which is 9.9 million tonnes more than in the same period last year.

The value of exports grew by USD 1.4 billion, which demonstrates the success of the agricultural sector in a challenging economic and geopolitical environment.

The main reason for this jump was the resumption of maritime traffic, which allowed for stable supplies to foreign markets. Currently, 89% of agricultural products are exported by sea, while rail is the predominant mode of transport. Only 2% of goods are transported by road.

Grain crops continue to occupy a leading position in the export structure: 42.3 million tonnes worth USD 7.1 billion were shipped over 9 months. Seeds and oilseeds also remain an important component – 5 million tonnes worth USD 2.2 billion.

Imports of agricultural products

As for imports, the situation is different. In particular, 80% of all imported agricultural products came to Ukraine by road, about 18% by sea, and almost 2% by rail. This is mainly due to imports from European countries, unlike exports, where goods are shipped all over the world.

In total, Ukraine imported 978.8 thousand tonnes of agricultural products worth USD 1.7 billion. Edible fruits and nuts accounted for almost half of all imports – 468 thousand tonnes worth USD 563.8 million. In addition to these, vegetables are significant in terms of the quantity of imported agricultural products – 194.2 thousand tonnes (USD 246.6 million), and oilseeds worth USD 346.5 million (50.2 thousand tonnes).
