Ukraine has struck another oil refinery in Russia: what are the consequences?

On the night of June 12, the Ukrainian Armed Forces attacked three facilities belonging to the Russian fuel and energy complex. In Nizhnekamsk (Tatarstan), one of the country’s largest petrochemical plants—Nizhnekamskneftekhim—was hit, according to monitoring channels. The plant is owned by Sibur and produces synthetic rubbers, plastics, monomers, and polyesters. This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Russian propaganda media.

Another strike hit the Nizhnekamsk oil refinery (OR) “Taneco.” Video footage shows two intense fires with thick black smoke. According to preliminary data, two ABT units—key facilities for primary oil refining—as well as the tank farm have been damaged. The plant is owned by Tatneft and has a capacity of 16.2 million tons per year. Additionally, it is reported that a drone struck a 12-story building, injuring three people. Residents were evacuated.

Nizhnekamsk Mayor Radmir Belyaev stated that all holiday events in the city leading up to Russia Day, celebrated on June 12, have been canceled. Tatarstan Head Rustam Minnikhanov confirmed that drones had flown into the Zakamye region, adding that “the enterprises that came under attack are quickly addressing the consequences.” According to him, “production processes have not been halted.”

In addition, the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck the “Tolyattikauchuk” chemical plant in Tolyatti, Samara Oblast. The plant is owned by Tatneft and produces synthetic rubbers, monomers, polymers, and additives for automotive gasoline. Mayor Ilya Sukhikh confirmed damage to an “industrial facility” caused by a falling UAV. Governor Vyacheslav Fedoryshchev reported that no one was injured during the drone attack on the region.

The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that on the night of June 11, air defense forces “intercepted and destroyed” 231 Ukrainian drones. According to the ministry, the UAVs were shot down over the aforementioned regions, as well as over the Astrakhan, Belgorod, Bryansk, Voronezh, Kaluga, Kursk, Lipetsk, Rostov, Saratov, Smolensk, Tula, and Ulyanovsk regions, the Moscow region, and the annexed Crimea.
