Ukraine has initiated a new approach to cooperation with the European Union, offering to partially fund the Armed Forces of Ukraine starting in 2026. This was announced by Finance Minister Sergii Marchenko after meetings in Canada during the G7 summit of financial leaders, "Komersant Ukrainian" reports.

According to Marchenko, the main topic of the talks was ways to meet Ukraine’s financial needs in the next budget period. The Ukrainian proposal is for European partners to join the financing of the Armed Forces, considering it as an element of the Ukrainian army’s integration into the European security system.

“Financing of the Ukrainian Armed Forces could be a small share of the EU’s GDP and be distributed among countries willing to join the initiative. These costs can also be taken into account within the defense commitments of NATO member states,” the minister said.

Marchenko emphasized that building up Europe’s own military capabilities will take years and significant resources, while integrating the Ukrainian army is a more efficient and cost-effective solution.

He also reminded that over the past three years, Ukraine has received more than $133 billion in international financial assistance.
