The European Gymnastics Union has lifted restrictions on athletes from Russia and Belarus: details

25 May 00:21

On May 24, the European Gymnastics Federation (European Gymnastics) lifted restrictions on athletes from Russia and Belarus. This is stated in a resolution by the organization’s executive committee, according to "Komersant Ukrainian", citing Radio Free Europe.

It should be noted that this decision was preceded by the World Gymnastics Executive Committee’s earlier approval of Russian gymnasts’ participation in international competitions under their national flag and with their national anthem.

The European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships will begin in Bulgaria on May 27, where Russian gymnasts will be able to participate.

Earlier, the Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) recommended no longer restricting the participation of Belarusian athletes (including teams) in competitions governed by international federations and organizers of international sporting events.

The restrictions were introduced on February 28, 2022, and March 28, 2023, and were linked to Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, which was facilitated by the Lukashenko regime. They were lifted by a decision of the IOC Executive Board on May 7, 2026.

The National Olympic Committee of Ukraine has lodged a “categorical protest” against the IOC’s decision. The NOC of Ukraine emphasizes that Belarus continues to support Russian aggression against Ukraine.
