Weekend weather: squalls, hail, and thunderstorms, but it will be warm

This weekend, May 23–24, the weather in Ukraine will be mixed. Some regions will be under the influence of a high-pressure system, so dry weather will prevail there. At the same time, in the south, east, and parts of the central regions, an atmospheric front will still be active, bringing short-lived rains, thunderstorms, hail in some places, and squalls. This was reported by meteorologist Natalka Didenko, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
The Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center also forecasts mostly dry weather on May 23–25, but on the afternoon of May 23 in the southern, eastern, and most central regions, and on May 24–25 in the southeast, short-lived rains, thunderstorms, hail in some places, and squalls of 15–20 m/s are possible.
Where will it be dry on Saturday
On Saturday, May 23, the influence of an anticyclone will spread to the west, north, and parts of the central regions. Therefore, mostly dry weather is expected in these regions.
Drier weather is forecast in:
- the western regions;
- northern regions;
- parts of the central regions.
At the same time, an atmospheric front will continue to bring rain and thunderstorms to the rest of the country.
Where to expect rain, hail, and squalls
According to the forecast by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, on Saturday, May 23, short-lived rains and thunderstorms are expected during the day in the southern, eastern, and most central regions. In some areas, hail and squalls of 15–20 m/s are possible.
On Sunday, May 24, rain will continue in eastern and southeastern Ukraine. By evening, another round of precipitation may reach Volyn, Rivne, and Zhytomyr regions. Rain is unlikely in the rest of the country.
What will the temperature be this weekend?
Despite the rain and thunderstorms, it will be warm in Ukraine. According to the forecast by the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, nighttime temperatures will range from 9–17°C, daytime temperatures from 21–26°C, and on May 23, temperatures in the southeastern part of the country will reach 30°C.
Natalka Didenko forecasts daytime temperatures of mostly 23–28°, while in the southeast, the heat will linger at 25–30°.
Weather in Kyiv on May 23–24
In Kyiv, dry weather will prevail over the weekend, May 23–24. Daytime temperatures on Saturday and Sunday are expected to range from 21 to 23°C.
For the capital, this will be a relatively calm period following a few days of unstable weather with rain and thunderstorms.
Why the weather will be so varied
Ukraine will be caught between a high-pressure system and an atmospheric front. The high-pressure system will bring drier weather to the west, north, and parts of the center. Meanwhile, the front will continue to affect the southern, eastern, and parts of the central regions, where thunderstorms, hail, and squalls are possible.
That is why one part of the country will have a weekend with almost no precipitation, while the other will experience brief but potentially dangerous storms.
