“Don’t expect Putin to fall”: General Yagun explained why the dictator’s death won’t change Russia

Ukraine may be quietly supporting efforts to weaken Russia, but even the removal of Vladimir Putin would not guarantee rapid change, as the Russian power structure is deeply entrenched and collective.
This was stated by Major General (ret.), former Deputy Head of the Security Service of Ukraine Viktor Yagun in an interview with the YouTube channel "Komersant Ukrainian".
Yagun noted that Ukraine is likely working to support anti-Russian processes, but is doing so without unnecessary publicity. According to him, Kyiv will not officially and openly support specific movements within Russia.
“If anything is being done, it is done very quietly, calmly, and without fanfare,” the expert explained.
At the same time, he emphasized that Ukraine’s strategic goal is clear.
“The destruction of Russia as an empire is our goal, and this is obvious,” Yagun stated.
Commenting on the possible consequences of the Russian president’s removal, the expert expressed skepticism about rapid changes. He attributes this to the peculiarities of the Russian political system.
“Everything there is built on traditions and collective decision-making,” Yagun explained.

Yagun added that the Kremlin is using the prospect of chaos following Putin’s departure as a tool to pressure the West.
“They are blackmailing Europe and the U.S. by claiming that without Putin there will be chaos and the issue of nuclear weapons control will become critical,” he emphasized.
According to Viktor Yagun, the key to change in Russia lies not in individual figures, but in the transformation of the entire system of power. Even radical scenarios, such as Putin’s removal, do not guarantee a rapid restructuring of the state, which continues to pose a threat to the region and the world.
