A Russian nighttime attack on Zaporizhzhia damaged the factory of Ukrainian coffee producer Isla. Windows were shattered inside the building, and other damage was reported. No one was injured, but there may be delays in processing and shipping orders in the coming days. The company reported on the consequences of the attack on its Facebook page, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to the manufacturer, the strike damaged the company’s premises, specifically shattering windows at the factory. None of the employees were injured.
The team is currently assessing the damage and carrying out the immediate work necessary to restore normal operations.
Is the Isla factory still operating?
The company has not reported a complete shutdown or a long-term suspension of production. However, the consequences of the attack may temporarily affect order fulfillment.
Isla has warned customers that delays are possible over the next few days:
- in processing new orders;
- in product assembly;
- in handing over packages to carriers;
- in shipping coffee to partners.
No specific timeline has been given yet for when the factory will return to normal operations. This will depend on the extent of the damage and the pace of restoration work.
What Is Known About the Attack on Zaporizhzhia
On the night of August 11, Russian troops carried out a massive combined attack on Zaporizhzhia. According to local authorities, industrial facilities and civilian infrastructure were targeted.
As a result of the shelling, residential buildings, non-residential structures, garages, and businesses in the city were damaged. Fires broke out in several locations, and power outages occurred in some areas.
As of August 11, Zaporizhzhia regional authorities reported seven fatalities and 24 injuries. August 12 was declared a day of mourning in the region.
During the same attack, production and energy facilities at Zaporizhzhia-based enterprises sustained serious damage. Therefore, the damage to the Isla factory was part of a much larger strike against the city’s industrial infrastructure.
What the Isla Factory in Zaporizhzhia Produces
The Isla factory has been operating in Zaporizhzhia since 2015. This is where coffee beans are roasted and finished products are prepared.
As stated on Isla’s official website, the company positions its products as premium Ukrainian coffee for everyday enjoyment. High-altitude Arabica beans are used in its production.
The factory is equipped with:
- equipment from the Swiss company Bühler for optical bean inspection;
- German Probat equipment for roasting;
- computerized systems for controlling the roasting profile;
- equipment for blending beans and checking product uniformity.
According to the brand, the optical system can inspect about 1,000 coffee beans per second and remove those with defects.
How the Ukrainian brand Isla came to be
Before launching its own production, the team behind Isla spent 14 years as the exclusive distributor of Italian illy coffee in Ukraine.
After the start of Russian aggression in 2014, the team decided to develop its own Ukrainian brand and production. The first batch of coffee was roasted at the Zaporizhzhia factory on April 24, 2015.
The name Isla translates from Spanish as “island.” The company associates it with Khortytsia in Zaporizhzhia and the image of a personal “island” for rest and rejuvenation.
