What to Do on a Train and at a Station During an Emergency: Ukrzaliznytsia Explains How Passengers Should Respond

12 August 04:00

“Ukrzaliznytsia” has urged passengers not to remain at train stations, on platforms, or on tracks during an air raid alert. At the same time, passengers should not leave the train on their own during a safety stop: evacuation begins only after a corresponding command from railway personnel. This is stated in a message from the Kyiv Regional Military Administration on its Telegram channel, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"

Due to the ongoing threat of Russian missile and air strikes, passengers were reminded of the rules of conduct on the railway during an air raid alert.

Railroad stations, junction stations, tracks, and rolling stock may come under attack. Therefore, once an air raid alert is announced, you must not remain at railroad facilities or wait for the all-clear on the platform.

What to Do During an Air Raid Alert at the Station

Upon hearing an air raid siren, passengers must immediately leave:

  • the station building;
  • the waiting room;
  • the platform;
  • the platform;
  • the area near trains and locomotives.

After that, proceed to the nearest official shelter. Do not wait for the alert to end inside the station unless you are certain that a protective structure is in place there.

It is especially dangerous to remain near glass facades, large windows, electronic display boards, and other structures that could be damaged.

Where to take shelter if there is no shelter near the station

At small stations and train stops, there may not be a designated shelter nearby. In such situations, Ukrainian Railways recommends moving to a safe distance from the railway infrastructure.

The following can be used as makeshift shelter:

  • a natural depression in the terrain;
  • a ditch;
  • a sturdy concrete structure.

Such a location must be situated outside the railway right-of-way, away from railcars, locomotives, tracks, and the overhead contact system.

Do not hide under railcars, near power line poles, or remain near moving trains.

Should you exit the train during an alarm?

An air raid siren does not automatically mean that passengers must immediately leave the car. Trains usually continue moving, and an emergency stop is implemented only in the event of a direct threat to a specific route.

If the train has stopped, passengers should:

  1. Remain calm.
  2. Listen to announcements from the train crew.
  3. Follow the instructions of the conductor or train manager.
  4. Do not step onto the tracks on your own.
  5. Do not crowd the aisles or vestibules.

Earlier, Ukrainian Railways explained that decisions regarding stops and possible evacuations are made after receiving information about a threat to a specific section of track or train. The company coordinates such actions with the Armed Forces and security services.

When to Leave the Car

You should only exit the train after railway personnel have announced an evacuation.

Upon receiving the command, passengers are advised to:

  • leave the car without delay;
  • follow the railway staff;
  • move away from the train and the tracks;
  • do not approach the overhead power lines;
  • do not gather in large groups near the train cars;
  • proceed to the designated safe area.

Leaving the train car without authorization can create additional danger, as the passenger does not know whether traffic on adjacent tracks has been halted or what specific threat caused the stoppage.

How the rules differ at the station and on the train

Where the passenger is locatedWhat to Do
Inside the station buildingLeave the building and proceed to an official shelter
On the platformMove away from the railway infrastructure
At a station without shelterUse a recess or concrete structure away from the tracks
On a moving trainStay in the car and listen for announcements
On a train during a safety stopFollow the railroad staff’s instructions carefully
After an evacuation orderLeave the car and proceed to the designated safe area

So, the basic procedure is simple: at the station or on the platform, you should make your own way to a shelter, and on the train, wait for instructions from railway staff and do not begin evacuating without a command.
