Mass Fish Die-Off in the Kyiv Region: Where Access to Water Bodies Has Been Restricted

Access by residents of the Kyiv region to three bodies of water has been restricted due to a massive fish kill. Experts are currently investigating the causes of this incident.
This was reported by "Komersant Ukrainian", citing a statement by Timur Tkachenko, head of the Kyiv Regional State Administration.
“Yesterday, local authorities noticed a massive fish kill in one of the region’s bodies of water. Today, it was reported in two more. According to preliminary estimates, approximately three metric tons of fish have died. On-site, specialists from the relevant agencies collected the necessary water samples to determine the source of the pollution,” he said.

Tkachenko noted that experts are currently investigating the causes of the incident. One possible explanation is a sewage leak.
“One possible explanation is a sewage leak that occurred during repair work at one of the nearby facilities in Kyiv. The pollution could have entered the region’s water bodies through the storm sewer system,” he said.
While the necessary measures are being taken, visitor access to the water bodies is restricted. An investigative team and a commission on technical and environmental safety and emergency situations are working at the site.
Until the test results are available, the following is prohibited:
- swim in the bodies of water;
- fishing;
- consume caught or dead fish;
- feed such fish to pets;
- allow children or pets near the water;
- avoid approaching areas where mass fish deaths have been reported unless necessary;
- do not touch dead fish or attempt to remove them yourself.
“The situation is under control. The relevant services are continuing their work. We will provide further updates on the results of the investigations, the causes of the pollution, and any additional restrictions,” according to a statement from the Borshchahivka Village Council.
The Borshchahivka community includes the villages of Petropavlivska Borshchahivka, Sofiivska Borshchahivka, and Chaiky, which directly border Kyiv.
