What Will Happen to Watermelon and Melon Prices: An Expert’s Forecast

The peak harvest season for melons is underway in Ukraine. Prices for watermelons and cantaloupes are falling every week, and this trend is expected to continue in the near future. This was reported in a comment
According to the expert, market supply continues to grow as the weather is favorable for farmers.
“Watermelons and cantaloupes are getting cheaper every week and will continue to do so because the harvest is still underway and supply is increasing. In other words, we currently see no signs that weather conditions will interfere with the harvest. In principle, prices could drop by another 10%,” Khorov noted.
The expert clarified that another price drop is expected in the coming weeks of August.
At the same time, the price decline will stop in the fall.
“As experience shows, prices no longer fall in September and October; they remain at a set level. The last batches are being sold, and supply is no longer increasing—that’s for sure,” the expert emphasized.
Khorov also assured that only Ukrainian produce is currently available on the market.
“This is our watermelon—harvesting is in full swing across all regions. And weather conditions are currently favorable: sunny and dry, more or less, which is normal for melon crops,” concluded the coordinator of EastFruit Weekly Ukraine.

The geography of Ukrainian watermelon cultivation has undergone catastrophic changes since the start of the full-scale invasion. The brunt of the impact fell on southern Ukraine, which supplied not only the country but also, in some cases, the European market with this juicy fruit.
In the Mykolaiv region, part of the territory has been lost, and operations have not resumed even in areas that have been de-occupied, as there are specific challenges there. In the Kherson region, all the main areas where melons were grown are now outside Ukraine’s control.
Despite the loss of a staggering amount of territory in the south, Ukrainian farmers were able to save the domestic market through regional relocation. Farmers began planting watermelons on a massive scale in regions where this was previously uncommon, which helped offset the shortage at least in the domestic market. The geographical scope of cultivation now covers nearly the entire country.
Watermelons are a crop that grows well in all regions of Ukraine, even in the west. They are grown exceptionally well in the Kirovohrad region, in the center, and literally across all regions.
It should be noted that the average price per kilogram of watermelon in retail chains is currently 21–25 hryvnias. The average price of melons in Ukraine starts at 55–60 hryvnias per kilogram.
The most expensive varieties in supermarkets are usually mini watermelons, yellow watermelons, or seedless varieties, which can cost as much as 100–150 UAH per kilogram.
