Bread Prices Are Rising Faster Than Inflation: How Much Do Ukrainians Pay for a Loaf?

Despite seasonal price drops for most products in July, bread continued to become more expensive. Over the past year, prices for bread and baked goods have risen by 18.6%—more than twice as fast as overall inflation. Production costs remain the main driver of prices, so a new grain harvest does not automatically mean cheaper bread. This is reported by "Komersant Ukrainian".
According to the State Statistics Service of Ukraine, consumer prices in Ukraine rose by only 0.3% month-over-month in July, while annual inflation accelerated to 7.7%. At the same time, food and non-alcoholic beverages actually became 0.2% cheaper overall. Against this backdrop, bread and pasta became 0.6% more expensive over the month.

Bread outpaced inflation by a factor of 2.4
Over the past year, bread has become significantly more expensive than goods and services overall:
- bread and bakery products: 18.6%;
- overall consumer price index: 7.7%;
- core inflation: 8.1%.
In other words, the price of a basket of bread is rising about 2.4 times faster than the average Ukrainian consumer basket.
According to the consumer price index, since the beginning of 2026, bread prices have risen by about 10.1%, while overall consumer prices have risen by about 6%. The “bread and bakery products” category rose by about 13.6%.
How much does a loaf cost?
It’s becoming increasingly difficult to rely solely on the price “per loaf,” as the weight of the products varies significantly.
According to data, as of early summer, the average price in Ukraine was:

In May alone, these items rose in price by about 1.9–3.5%, depending on the type.
According to estimates by Svitlana Cheremisina, a senior research fellow at the National Scientific Center “Institute of Agrarian Economics,” bread prices will continue to rise. In particular, she predicted:
67–68 UAH/kg for premium-grade wheat bread,
up to 57 UAH/kg for first-grade wheat bread,
58–59 UAH/kg for rye bread, and
up to 35 UAH for a 500-gram loaf.
