In response to a massive attack by the Russian Federation, Ukraine is calling for an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council

6 July 12:52

Ukraine has officially requested an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council in response to the second large-scale attack by Russian forces in recent days, involving missiles and drones. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sibiga announced this on social media platform X, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".

What did Sibiga call on the UN to do?

According to the foreign minister, the decision was made following the second large-scale missile and drone attack in a matter of days, which resulted in new civilian casualties.

“Every Russian missile launched against Ukraine sends a message far beyond our borders. It seeks to convince the world that violence can replace the rule of law, that fear is stronger than solidarity, and that brutality has no consequences. Following the second massive missile and drone attack carried out by Russia in just a few days, Ukraine is demanding that an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council be convened,” he wrote.

Sibiga emphasized that the death toll from the latest strike continues to rise. He also recalled that the previous attack on July 2 claimed the lives of at least 31 civilians in Kyiv.

“We call on the Democratic Republic of the Congo, which currently holds the Security Council presidency, and its members to support Ukraine’s request. Belated or weak reactions cannot stop the terror. Only a decisive, principled, and timely response can do so,” Sibiga emphasized.

The foreign minister stressed that the international community must act as a united front to deter Russian aggression and promote a just and lasting peace in accordance with the UN Charter.

Massive shelling of the capital

As a reminder, Russia’s massive airstrike on Kyiv on the night of July 6 resulted in new civilian casualties and widespread destruction in several districts of the capital. According to city authorities and the Kyiv City Military Administration, the number of dead and injured continues to rise, and rescue operations are ongoing.

Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko reported that the Podil and Darnytsia districts of Kyiv were the hardest hit. In the Podil district, five people were killed and more than 30 others were injured as a result of a missile strike.

In the Darnytskyi district, a missile struck a courtyard between high-rise buildings, killing six residents. Among the 28 people rescued were two four-year-old children who were evacuated during the rescue operation.

According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, the nighttime attack took place in several waves. First, Russian forces used ballistic missiles, including “Iskander,” “Zircon,” and S-400 missiles, after which they launched cruise missiles and attack drones. Air defense forces destroyed some of the targets, but debris and direct hits caused significant damage to residential infrastructure.

In the Podilskyi district, a high-rise building was partially destroyed between the 7th and 9th floors, trapping people inside. Rescue workers were able to evacuate at least 15 people and bring several children and adults down from the upper floors.

Another 25-story building was also damaged, with destruction reported on the 16th floor. Overall, damage and fires have been reported at several locations across the capital, and efforts to address the aftermath of the strike are ongoing.
