Ignat warned of a new Russian tactic: a massive strike could happen at any time
6 July 12:20
Following a nighttime combined attack on Kyiv, Yuriy Ignat, head of the Communications Directorate of the Ukrainian Air Force, stated during a national telethon that Russia has changed its airstrike tactics and may launch a new massive attack in the very near future, reports "Komersant Ukrainian"
According to the military official, the intervals between large-scale shelling are shortening, and the occupiers are increasingly focusing on the use of ballistic missiles.
Russia is relying on ballistic missiles
As Yuriy Ignat noted during the national telethon, all hits and serious damage in Kyiv during the July 6 attack were caused specifically by ballistic missiles.
According to him, during the massive strike, Russian forces launched 23 missiles, including:
- “Iskander-M” ballistic missiles;
- S-400 missiles, used to strike ground targets;
- “Zircon” anti-ship missiles;
- “Onyx” missiles, which were launched from the north and followed a ballistic trajectory.
Ignat emphasized that only modern missile defense systems, specifically the Patriot and its equivalents, can effectively intercept such targets.
“You can see how many times the president mentioned the Patriot in yesterday’s address. There was a strong emphasis on air defense… Only Patriot missiles and their equivalents can counter such ballistic threats,” Ignat emphasized.
Ukraine Needs More Patriot Systems
According to Ignat, the issue of strengthening Ukraine’s air defense will be one of the key topics during upcoming talks with international partners.
Ukrainian Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov announced that he will hold a series of talks today with the defense ministers of countries that have Patriot missiles in stock.
He noted that Ukraine has already signed contracts to purchase new missiles and is continuing to work on acquiring them. However, deliveries under these contracts are not expected until next year.
That is why the Ukrainian side is appealing to its international partners to immediately transfer missiles from their existing stockpiles and subsequently replace them with new deliveries.
The Ministry of Defense emphasizes that the swift adoption of such a decision could significantly strengthen the defense of Ukrainian airspace against Russian ballistic missiles.
“The key appeal to our partners is to transfer missiles from their stockpiles right now, with a commitment to replace them later,” Fedorov noted.
The head of the defense ministry stressed that delays caused by bureaucratic procedures directly affect the safety of Ukrainians, as every day of delay could cost human lives during new massive attacks by Russia.
Ukrainian air defense forces completely destroyed all “Kalibr” missiles
Despite the challenging situation with ballistic missiles, the Ukrainian air defense system has demonstrated high effectiveness in other areas.
According to Ignat:
- all “Kalibr” cruise missiles launched by Russia were destroyed;
- a significant portion of the attack drones were also successfully intercepted.
At the same time, he warned that combating drones is becoming increasingly difficult.
He also noted that Russia may reorient its military-industrial complex from the production of cruise missiles to the manufacture of more sophisticated, high-tech ballistic weapons.

Russia Is Modernizing the “Shaheds”
An Air Force representative reported that Russia is not only increasing drone production but is also constantly improving them.
According to him, new variants of the Shahed -type drones are receiving improved protection against electronic warfare (EW) systems.
In addition, the occupiers are increasingly using jet-powered drones, which the Ukrainian Air Force is forced to intercept using expensive air-to-air guided missiles.
A new massive strike could happen at any time
Yuriy Ignat noted that only four days passed between the last two massive attacks on Kyiv. This indicates a shift in tactics by Russian forces, who are shortening the intervals between large-scale strikes.
At the same time, he urged Ukrainians not to ignore air raid alerts.
“Their capabilities are not unlimited. If they had the ability to shell us every day, they would do so,” Ignat noted.
The Air Force emphasizes that despite Russia’s limited resources, the threat of new combined attacks remains high; therefore, citizens must closely monitor official announcements and promptly seek shelter during air raid alerts.
