Why Is the Euro Rising When the Dollar Is Falling?
The differing movements of the currencies are explained by the mechanism of exchange rate formation. The value of the euro in hryvnia depends on two factors at once:
- the hryvnia’s exchange rate against the dollar;
- the euro-dollar exchange rate on the international market.
According to the European Central Bank, on August 20, one euro was worth about 1.1681 dollars. The day before, the exchange rate was approximately 1.1605 dollars per euro.
In other words, the European currency strengthened against the U.S. dollar by about 0.7%.
Until August 21, the all-time high was considered to be 52.0378 UAH per euro, set on June 16. After that, the euro mostly remained below the psychological threshold of 52 hryvnias throughout the summer.
The NBU’s new exchange rate is:
- 1 dollar — 44.6144 UAH;
- 1 euro — 52.1301 UAH;
- 1 Polish zloty — 12.0685 UAH;
- 1 pound sterling — 60.8237 UAH;
- 1 Swiss franc — 55.8805 UAH.
