A severe heat wave with thunderstorms is set to hit Ukraine: weather forecast for August 21

21 August 03:23

On Friday, August 21, a severe heat wave will sweep across Ukraine. In most regions, temperatures will rise to 35–37 °C, with virtually no precipitation expected.

The exception will be the northern part of the country, where brief showers and thunderstorms are possible in some areas during the day. This is according to the official forecast from the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"

Where will it be hottest on August 21?

Air temperatures throughout the day will be as follows:

  • at night across Ukraine — 15…20 °C;
  • during the day in most regions — 35…37 °C;
  • in the southeastern regions — 30…34 °C;
  • in Kyiv — around 35 °C;
  • in the Kyiv region — 35… 37 °C.

Southwesterly winds will prevail at speeds of 7–12 meters per second.

Where Rain and Thunderstorms Are Possible

No significant precipitation is expected across most of the country. Short-lived rain accompanied by thunderstorms may occur during the day in isolated areas of the northern regions.

No precipitation is forecast for Kyiv at night, but thunderstorms are also possible in some parts of the capital and the region during the day. At the same time, even brief rain will not bring a lasting drop in temperature.

Fire danger will affect nearly the entire country

From August 21–23, an extreme fire danger level is forecast for most regions of Ukraine.

Only four western regions are not included in the highest-risk zone:

  • Volyn;
  • Lviv;
  • Ivano-Frankivsk;
  • Zakarpattia.

In the rest of the country, dry vegetation can catch fire even from a small source of ignition. Heat, a prolonged lack of rainfall, and wind will contribute to the rapid spread of fires in forests, fields, and open areas.
