The European Commission may impose sanctions on Poland over its embargo on Ukrainian products

The European Commission has not ruled out opening proceedings against Poland over its continued embargo on imports of certain agricultural products from Ukraine. Brussels notes that unilateral decisions by member states could jeopardize the integrity of the EU single market. However, there is still hope for dialogue and cooperation, reports [Kommersant], citing In Poland.
Recently, European Commission spokesperson Olof Gill did not rule out the possibility that a case could be brought against Poland in the future for violating European Union law. The reason is that Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary continue to maintain a ban on imports of certain agricultural products from Ukraine.

The European Commission has long been threatening Poland with sanctions over this issue, but no decisive measures have been taken so far.
Poland, Slovakia, and Hungary imposed an embargo on agricultural products from Ukraine following a massive influx of Ukrainian goods in 2023. This led to a sharp drop in prices and serious problems for local farmers.
However, the European Commission has emphasized that member states cannot impose such restrictions on their own. Therefore, Brussels has called for the embargo to be lifted.
The EC noted that a new trade agreement with Ukraine has been in effect since November 2025. It provides for significantly lower import quotas, which, according to the Commission, should sufficiently protect the interests of EU farmers and prevent a repeat of the situation that occurred several years ago.
Despite the entry into force of the new trade agreement with Ukraine, Poland has decided to maintain the embargo on imports of Ukrainian grain and certain grain products.
