Svyrydenko May Head the Embassy in the U.S.: Who Is in the Running for Prime Minister?

Yulia Svyrydenko may be appointed Ukraine’s ambassador to the U.S., and four candidates are currently being considered for the position of the new head of the Cabinet of Ministers. This was reported by [Komersant], citing a statement by People’s Deputy Yaroslav Zheleznyak.
According to Zheleznyak, Svyrydenko’s possible appointment as ambassador to the U.S. would mean her resignation as prime minister and a reshuffle of the entire Cabinet. The current Ukrainian ambassador to the U.S., Olga Stefanishyna, will be removed from her post, although Zheleznyak did not specify the reasons.

The MP noted that, as of now, the following are being considered as possible candidates for the position of head of government:
- Oleksiy Koretsky;
- Denys Shmyhal;
- Mykhailo Fedorov;
- Ihor Terekhov.
“Replacing Svyrydenko from the post of prime minister with the U.S. ambassador is a somewhat forced move right now. It’s one the government wasn’t really prepared for. The final decision was made today at a meeting with the President at 1:00 p.m., so all other steps haven’t been thoroughly thought through,” he wrote.
According to the lawmaker, the leading candidate for prime minister is Serhiy Koretskyi. This is already 95% decided.
It is expected that during the plenary session on July 13–14, the Verkhovna Rada may consider Svyrydenko’s dismissal from the post of prime minister. After that, the entire government is to assume the status of acting officials.
According to Zheleznyak, Denys Shmyhal, as first deputy prime minister, will temporarily assume the duties of prime minister.
The lawmaker noted that the appointment of a new prime minister and the formation of a new government are two separate votes. The new Cabinet is nominated by the prime minister who has already been appointed.
Separately, the Verkhovna Rada must vote on two ministers whose nominations are submitted by the president: the Minister of Defense and the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
According to the lawmaker, the leading candidate for prime minister is Serhiy Koretskyi. This is already 95% decided.
As a reminder, on Sunday, July 12, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced that he had offered Svyrydenko the opportunity to lead a new direction in relations with a key partner. He also announced a reshuffle of the Cabinet of Ministers and the leadership of law enforcement agencies.
