The End of the Fake Era on Spotify: How the Platform Will Label AI Musicians
12 August 14:14
The streaming platform Spotify has announced the launch of a special “AI persona” label that will appear on the profiles and track lists of artists generated by artificial intelligence. At the same time, the service will no longer recommend such artists to users by default. The Guardian reported on the new feature, according to "Komersant Ukrainian"
When will the new rules take effect?
To distinguish artists created by artificial intelligence, they will be labeled “AI persona.” This is being done to differentiate fake artists from real performers, who may lose out to their artificial competitors in streaming plays.
Spotify explains:
“A genuine connection between an artist and a fan can only be built on trust and authenticity. In music, this means that listeners must be able to trust that the artist behind the music is who they claim to be. This is more important than ever in the age of generative artificial intelligence.”

Key Changes and Identification Mechanism
The main goal of the changes is to clearly distinguish between real musicians and AI-generated projects, ensuring fair competition on the platform. AI artists will be labeled accordingly and excluded from personalized algorithmic playlists.
Spotify will use a combined approach to identify AI-generated artists. Specifically, artists will be able to indicate the AI project status themselves, and the company will use special AI tools to analyze profiles and engage its specialists to moderate questionable accounts.
The company emphasizes that profiles with artificial identities almost always contain tracks created by AI.
“Listeners have made it clear to us that they don’t like seeing an artist’s profile that appears human, only to discover that the image was created by artificial intelligence,” Spotify notes.
Background of This Decision
Over the past year, Spotify has removed more than 75 million spam tracks from its platform. By comparison, the service’s catalog contains about 100 million songs.
Examples of such AI projects include Velvet Sundown and Sienna Rose.
Velvet Sundown is an AI-generated imitation of a 1970s rock band that attracted 117,000 monthly listeners without any explicit mention of its artificial origin in its profile. There was also discussion about the soul artist Sienna Rose, who had over 500,000 monthly listeners and made it into the top 50 of the viral charts without performing a single live show or releasing a single music video.
Spotify’s policy update is intended to protect the copyrights of real artists and increase the streaming service’s transparency for users.
