On Sunday, May 31, Kyiv Day is celebrated in the capital. The holiday is observed on the last Sunday in May, and for the fifth year in a row, it is taking place under martial law, according to "Komersant Ukrainian".
The year 482 is considered the officially accepted date of Kyiv’s founding. According to legend, it was founded by the Polyan prince Kyi, along with his brothers Shchek and Khoryv, and his sister Lybid. The city was named in honor of Kyi.
Kyiv Day was first celebrated in 1982—the year the city turned 1,500 years old. Since then, the capital has celebrated the holiday annually.
