Spring is a time of intensification of some seasonal diseases and their pathogens, including parvovirus. Komersant Ukrainskyi
asked infectious disease doctor Serhii Kramariov about the danger of the disease, its course and possible consequences.
According to the doctor, parvovirus is a regular pathogen, with outbreaks occurring mainly in spring and autumn, but it can also occur in other seasons. The virus is transmitted through the respiratory tract, and both children and adults get sick with it.
“The symptoms are commonplace: fever, lethargy, drowsiness, lack of appetite, and most importantly, a characteristic rash, red cheeks, like after being slapped. And the rash on the body is peculiar. At first, it looks like measles, rubella, and then it becomes like a mesh, like lace on the body. It can disappear and reappear. This is the disease. It’s nothing special,”
– the doctor said.
According to the expert, pregnant women and people with immune problems are at risk.
“There can be various complications, joint damage, aplastic crisis, that is, suppression of haematopoiesis. The nervous system can be involved, as well as the kidneys and various internal organs, but this is in people with immunodeficiencies. There may be various defects in the newborn or even stillbirths,”
– kramaryov informed.
However, in the vast majority of cases, the disease is at the level of seasonal acute respiratory infections. Traditionally, the virus is less threatening to children than to adults. However, the disease is protracted and can last 7-10 days.
