Wet snow as early as the beginning of November: where and when to expect precipitation

29 October 15:59

Up to 14 centimeters of snow has already fallen in the Carpathians, so Ukraine’s first snow isn’t on the horizon—it’s already here in the mountains. A cold snap is expected in other regions in early November, but forecasters aren’t predicting a sustained snow cover just yet.

Natalia Golenia, head of the meteorological forecasting department at the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center, spoke about this in a comment to "Komersant Ukrainian".

When Will It Get Colder in Ukraine?

The meteorologist forecasts a cold snap for next week. Nighttime temperatures will range from -3° to 3°, and daytime temperatures will be 1… 6°. It will be warmer in the south of the country—up to 8°.

“We expect a cold snap next week. This will be particularly noticeable on November 5, 6, 7, and to some extent on November 8, when cold Arctic air will spread toward us from the north,” the meteorologist said.

Will it snow in the cities?

During the cold snap, light precipitation—rain and wet snow—is possible. According to Goleni, snow may fall briefly, but no significant snow cover is expected at this time.

“There won’t be any snow cover as such just yet. It will flutter down, but only lightly for now,” she noted.

If wet snow falls at night, it may linger on the ground briefly but will melt during the day. We’re talking about roughly one to two centimeters, not a lasting snow cover.

“It will definitely get colder, but there won’t be a snow cover that’s really substantial… Maybe just one or two centimeters—if it falls at night, it will lie on the ground for a while, but it will melt during the day. There won’t be a lasting snow cover just yet, because the precipitation is light,” Golenia concluded.

The meteorologist also noted that the forecast may still be revised:

“Starting next Monday, we’ll keep an eye on things—the situation may change.”

In the Ukrainian Hydrometeorological Center’s monthly forecast, the average temperature in November is estimated to be between 1 and 7°, which is close to the climatic norm.

Monthly precipitation is expected to be 34–77 mm, and 77–100 mm in the highlands of the Carpathians, which is within the range of 80–120% of the norm.

This is a preliminary monthly forecast, and specific dates for precipitation and temperatures are subject to change.
