The 2026 Nobel Peace Prize: How Many Nominees Are There, and Is Trump Among Them?

30 April 23:24

A total of 287 candidates have been nominated for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize. Among them are 208 individuals and 79 organizations. U.S. President Donald Trump is likely among the contenders, though this cannot be officially confirmed: the Norwegian Nobel Committee does not disclose the names of nominees for 50 years. This was reported by Reuters, citing a statement by Christian Berg Harpviken, secretary of the Norwegian Nobel Committee, as reported by "Komersant Ukrainian"

According to him, this year’s list has been significantly updated compared to last year, and the prize itself remains particularly important at a time when the number of conflicts in the world is growing and international cooperation is under pressure.

Harpviken noted that he was surprised by the significant number of new nominees on the list. He has served as secretary of the committee since January 2025.

Is Trump among the nominees?

Donald Trump is likely among the nominees. Reuters reports that leaders from Cambodia, Israel, and Pakistan have announced their nominations of Trump for the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize.

However, it is impossible to verify this officially. The names of the nominees and those who nominated them are kept secret for 50 years. This rule is enshrined in the statutes of the Nobel Foundation.

It is also important to note that the nomination itself does not imply support from the Nobel Committee and is no guarantee of winning.

Anyone from the group of people authorized to nominate candidates can submit a name.

Who Can Nominate Candidates

The Nobel Peace Prize can be nominated not only by members of the Nobel Committee. Thousands of people in various countries around the world have the right to submit nominations.

Among them are:

  • members of governments and parliaments;
  • sitting heads of state;
  • professors of history, social sciences, law, philosophy, and related disciplines;
  • former Nobel Peace Prize laureates;
  • members of relevant international institutions.

The official Nobel Prize website explains that a separate letter of invitation is not required to submit a nomination if the person meets the nominator’s criteria.

Who else is mentioned among the possible contenders

Since the official list is confidential, the media and betting sites can only speculate on who might be among the candidates.

Reuters mentions Yulia Navalny, the wife of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny, Pope Leo, and Emergency Response Rooms—a Sudanese volunteer humanitarian network—among the likely contenders.

It is also known that Lisa Murkowski, a U.S. senator from Alaska, and Aaja Kemnitz, a member of the Danish Parliament from Greenland, have been nominated. They were nominated by Norwegian MP Lars Hultbrekken for their work on building trust and promoting peaceful development in the Arctic region.

The Nobel Committee is concerned about the condition of Narges Mohammadi

Separately, Christian Berg Harpviken stated that the Norwegian Nobel Committee is deeply concerned about the health of Iranian human rights activist Narges Mohammadi, the 2023 Nobel Peace Prize laureate.

According to Harpvik, her condition has deteriorated following a heart attack in prison. The Committee hopes that the Iranian authorities will heed international pressure and release Mohammadi so that she can receive proper medical treatment.

When will the laureate be announced?

The winner of the 2026 Nobel Peace Prize will be announced on October 9, 2026.

The award ceremony will traditionally take place on December 10—the anniversary of Alfred Nobel’s death.

Last year, the prize was awarded to Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado.

Why this prize matters now

The Nobel Peace Prize remains one of the most influential international awards. It is awarded for contributions to ending conflicts, protecting human rights, promoting democracy, humanitarian work, and strengthening international cooperation.

Against the backdrop of wars, political instability, and weakening global coordination, the prize takes on even greater significance.

Harpviken himself stated that in the current climate, the Peace Prize is “even more important,” as there is no shortage of people and organizations working for peace around the world.
